Sleeping Bear Dune Rides: Remembering the Dunesmobiles
Taking a truck loaded with people tearing around the Sleeping Bear Dunes would land you in jail. But long before the days of endangered pitcher thistle plants and piping plovers, back when most people thought that a fragile ecosystem was something you better pack with extra styrofoam, there were the Dune Rides. Art from Michigan's Wine Country (Feb 3), Taste the Passion wine tour (Feb 4 & 5), Sleeping Bear Snowshoe Hikes (Every Saturday). Check the Leelanau Calendar. The Leelanau Enterprise talked to Brad Lutz regarding the listing of Sugar Loaf:
Lutz told the Enterprise on Wednesday morning that his “option to purchase” Sugar Loaf Resort from Wickstrom remains in force, and that he was still in the “due diligence” phase of his efforts to acquire the resort. Even though Wickstrom decided to list the property for sale after Lutz signed an agreement with her, he said "nothing has changed from my perspective."

(updated Thursday, Feb 28)
Glen Lake pulled off a hat trick by beating Suttons Bay for the third time this year with a 56-50 victory on Monday (see Record-Eagle story). Last night against Charlevoix the Lakers lost a 74-73 thriller (story coming soon we hope!).
In Class D action Leland followed up a 72-31 victory over Northport on Monday with a 79-42 defeat of Beaver Island. Lake Leelanau St Mary likewise rolled into Friday's final with a 79-24 victory over Leelanau School on Monday and 69-16 triumph over Grand Traverse Academy.
I was chatting with Rob Serbin yesterday and he let me know that Sugar Loaf Resort has been listed on the MLS (for the low-low price of $5.7 million):
Michigan's famous Olympic mountain ski resort located in beautiful Leelanau county. This 478 acre (8 Parcel development) includes 144,000 Square foot lodge and hotel facility, airport, vacant land and much more!!
It's listed through the TheNetworkAgents.com and they direct questions about the state of the resort to Kate Wickstrom's attorney Joseph Quandt. According to the comment below, the listing is through Carolyn Collins at cjcollins.net (you can get it through the other link too).
I think it's important to note that right now, the fact that it's been listed probably doesn't mean a whole lot in regards to the Brad Lutz bid for the resort. Thanks also to Lex and everyone who emailed it over and stay tuned to our Sugar Loaf coverage (and look for something in tonight's Enterprise).
Celtic rock group The Young Dubliners return to the area after a long hiatus to play a pre-St. Patrick's Day Celebration the concert at the Inside Out Gallery. The concert takes place this Sunday (March 2) at 7 PM and tickets are $15 in advance.
The Young Dubliners are a great band that really rocked when they came to Interlochen several years ago and I have no doubt that fans of Irish music, folk and rock will thoroughly enjoy this show.
More about the band at youngdubliners.com and at their MySpace page.

Hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy the outdoors!
The Northwest Michigan Ballet Theatre will present the full-length original ballet "Hansel and Gretel" this Sunday (Feb 24) at 3 PM at the Northport Community Arts Center. The ballet is based on the Classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of two Bavarian children who neglect their chores and are sent by their mother into the forest to collect berries for supper.

The cast of 23 dancers includes students ages 10-18 as well as five adults in guest roles. General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under or seniors. Tickets may be reserved by phoning Ballet, Etc. at 929-2787 or purchased at the door.

News from the Week
The week began with Valentines Day and a card showing the fashions of 1912. In addition to posts on the upcoming Northport Winter Carnival and the musical group Barefoot Tango, we started our post on the 2008 boys and girls basketball tournaments which we'll keep updating as long as Leelanau teams are in the chase. We also had a feature on the February 20th eclipse and Ed Hahnenberg's Lake Leelanau observatory. Although we didn't get clear skies up here for the eclipse, but other parts of Michigan had a great view - check out photos of the eclipse at Michigan in Pictures!

Over on Absolute Michigan we have a post titled Full Moon (cabin) Fever - February 20, 2008 Eclipse that gives you most of what you need to know about tomorrow night's total lunar eclipse. A look at the weather suggests that it's actually not completely impossible that we would be able to see it!
By happy coincidence, Ed Hannenberg introduced me to the web site for the Hahnenberg Observatory of Lake Leelanau. He says he has the largest telescope in the area, a 14" Meade LX200GPS-SMT Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope, an 8" Orion refractor, and a Coronado h-Alpha telescope for viewing sun flares and prominences, along with CCD and digital SLR cameras for optimal planetary and deep-sky photography.
With features like photographs such as the one to the right and a monthly sky report for our area, you'll probably want to bookmark it!
