Nearly a foot of snow has closed Leelanau and Traverse area schools this morning. Here's hoping that all you kids get a chance to play in the snow today … and how cool is it that Michigan kids get these random holidays through the winter?

News from the Week
The news included an update on the Sugar Loaf situation, a vote by Northport's school board to commit to keeping the high school open and a report (with lots of photos) from the TC Kite Derby.
The Week's Weather
This week we broke free from a long run of sub-20s. Unfortunately, we skipped right past moderate cold and went full on to "springlike." While the Homestead, Crystal and most trails still have good coverage (and falling temps should keep it that way), we did drop a fair amount of snow over the last few days.

There was a great turnout for last weekend's TC Kite Derby. The TC Record Eagle has a report from the event, which apparently is Michigan's largest winter kiteboarding event.
I was there and talked with a lot of folks. I was pleased to find that there were quite a few from out of the area and for several, and that for many of these, this was their first visit to the area.
This photo is one of a set of 15 or so photos from the TC Kite Derby that you can view on Flickr.
The Enterprise reports that the Northport Public School Board voted 5-1 to commit to keeping Northport High School open. According to the paper:
Northport High School junior Betsy Shiner has one more year of school to complete before she moves on to college and embarks on the rest of her life … "We live in a small town, we should have a small school. I love being at school. It’s great to have a family here like we do at this school. We get more attention from the staff. We need to take advantage of that and keep it open."
Read Board: Keep school open in the Leelanau Enterprise and also see the Northport School web site.
This week's Enterprise reports on a new wrinkle in the already wrinkled tapestry that is Sugar Loaf. Cleveland Township resident and former planning commission chairman Charles J. Ryant Jr. has announced his intention to circulate a petition for a referendum on a zoning ordinance amendment that the Township Board adopted to streamline the Planned Unit Development (PUD) approval process for Sugar Loaf. Ryant apparently has issues with the lack of concessions required of developers who apply for PUDs.
The article also notes that Kings Challenge golf pro and manager Chuck Olson is now working for John Sills and that he is confident the course will open this spring. Olson did say:
"From the customer’s perspective, nothing’s going to change at the golf courses, but in terms of reuniting the golf course properties with the ski resort – what's happening now appears to be a step backward rather than a step forward."
