The Record-Eagle reports that Tendercare, Inc. will open their new long-term care facility in Suttons Bay today. The 62 residents at Tendercare's Northport location will be moved to the new 72-bed center next to the Suttons Bay school. All employees from Northport will be moving to the new location and Parkside Management Services is developing Northport Highlands, a senior housing complex at the Leelanau Memorial site. That project will include a mix of independent and assisted living and is expected to open in 2007.

The Enterprise reports that an idea to close Northport High School in three years and send all 9th through 12th grade students to Leland or Suttons Bay for courses was presented at last week’s meeting of the county collaboration steering committee. The school district’s largest class of 21 students will graduate next spring. The entire high school student body numbers 57 for an average class size of just over 14.

News from the Week
The week's top story was a Leelanau Enterprise report that the executive committee of the Leelanau County Board of Commissioners would consider a recommendation from the county’s Solid Waste Council to approve imposition of a $29 per-household fee in the seven townships where voters approved the surcharge and ask for a voluntary payment of the fee from residents of the townships that rejected the measure. According to this week's paper, it sounds as if this plan is moving forward. We also link to an interesting feature on Leelanau Independent Women for Democratic Action (LIWDA), a non-partisan, progressive, political action group.

The Glen Arbor Sun has an interesting feature on Leelanau Independent Women for Democratic Action (LIWDA), a non-partisan, progressive, political action group.
Co-founder Celeste Crouch said "This little group we had, the four of us, we decided to take our discontentment and turn it into positive energy. We created a forum and a way for (women) to get involved and make a difference."

I got a chuckle from this too:
Solid Waste Council chairman Bill Perkins noted that he had been criticized by an opponent of the county's proposed recycling fee by suggesting that those who take their recyclables to Grand Traverse County or anywhere they have not paid for recycling services were like "shoplifters."
"Actually, I checked with the county prosecutor's office, and 'shoplifting' is not the correct term - so I apologize," Perkins said. "The correct term, I am told, is 'larceny by conversion.'"

The Week's Weather
We saw a good deal of sun last week with temps in the 70s. Labor Day weekend was gorgeous! Lake Michigan is getting colder but there's still brave folks swimming there. We're seeing the first turnings of the trees, so colder weather is probably not far off.
There wasn't much to speak of in the way of news.

The Leelanau Almanac (and blog ... and blogger) took a vacation to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. As a result, no news or weather was recorded. Temps were generally in the upper 70s, there was a good deal of sun, some rain and it was breezy at times.
