Wreck of the Jennie and Annie washes up on Sleeping Bear Point
About a week ago now I came across this photo by Mark Lindsay. I asked former Park Ranger Bill Herd, and he told me what has since come out in the media. Sleeping Bear Dunes historians believe the schooner fragment, estimated to be about 40-feet long and peppered with twisted metals spikes, is part of the shipÕs bilge keelsons, which the Oxford Handbook of Maritime Archeology says were long timbers running most of the shipÕs length, strengthening the keel.   read more »

News from the Week

The top story from the week was a Leelanau Enterprise report that Suttons Bay and Northport can’t act fast enough to cope with "structural" issues and are willing to commit to explore more radical collaborative efforts, such as consolidation. There's a lot more. Not much else in the way of news, but we did have a nice photo and some information about the Glen Lake Canning Co and an NPR radio feature that visited Leelanau County.

The Week's Weather

With the exception of Saturday, the last week has been great with lots of sun and temps in the mid to upper 70s. The nights have been getting into the 50s and the lakes, while still very nice for swimming, are cooling off a bit.

Schools Sound the Alarm

The long-shuttered Port Oneida SchoolThe Leelanau Enterprise reports that Suttons Bay and Northport can’t act fast enough to cope with "structural" issues that could mean the end of a system that has guided Leelanau County schools for the past 50 years. The article says:

The urgency could be heard in the voices of interim Suttons Bay Superintendent James Leyndyke and Northport Superintendent/Principal Ty Wessell.

"We are losing 35 to 50 students each year and are expected to do this in each of the next four years," said Leyndyke, hired this spring after the departure of former school head Tom Harwood. "We’ll be broke within 2 1/2 years if we keep going down the road we’re going."

The story continues to say that while reps from Suttons Bay and Northport appeared willing to commit to explore  more radical collaborative efforts, such as consolidation, their counterparts from Leland and Glen Lake would not commit until reaffirming their positions with their respective school boards.

News from the Week

The top story was (I guess) a couple week old feature on Leelanau's & Michigan's wine and wine tourism industry from the Chicago Tribune. It has some great information on how the wine business is growing, talks to some folks in the biz and includes the tidbit that nearly half of the Michigan wines sold come from Leelanau County.

In addition to a lot of stories about events (be sure to read the Pow Wow article because there's some interesting links) there was a nice profile of the village of Maple City from the Glen Arbor Sun.

The Week's Weather

There was a lot of sun, enough wind to kick up some decent-sized body surfing waves and nights cool enough for great sleeping. All in all, about what you can expect for mid to late August (which is for my money the best time of the summer).
August 11, 2006: Sunny & low 70s (73Ëš/58Ëš)

Leelanau & Michigan Wine & Wine Tourism Booming

Leelanau vineyard (Black Star Farms)A couple of weeks ago, the Chicago Tribune had a great article about Michigan's (and Leelanau's) wine industry that begins:

Forty-five degrees north latitude is an imaginary line encircling the earth that runs just a few miles south of this quiet Lake Michigan town. The line's claim to fame is its position, pretty much halfway between the equator and North Pole.

Here on the Leelanau Peninsula, though, the 45th parallel means something more. Folks are quick to tell you the line crosses some of the world's top wine regions: Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, Italy's Piedmont, the Willamette Valley of Oregon and ... northwest Michigan.

The article is very detailed and provides a lot of information on Michigan's $100 million wine and wine tourism industry, including the fact that nearly half the wines sold come from Leelanau (something I was unaware of).
