The Leelanau Enterprise and the Traverse City Record-Eagle both have stories about evolving discussions for community purchase and establishment of a regional park at the site of several proposed but never completed developments in Elmwood Township. Owner Dr. John Milliken has proposed property could become home for a performing arts center that would host the Traverse Symphony Orchestra. Other potential uses include a home for the Traverse City zoo, a convention center and botanical gardens. The land is diverse enough to allow for intense uses and still offer hiking and cross country trails with stunning views of the Grand Traverse Bay.

At Leelanau.com, we receive more than 10,000 emails a day. Spam filters take care of a lot of those but we still get a ton of email.
We do our best to read every one of them, but we really need your help to help us see them!
The most important thing you can do is choose a subject that is clear and helps to identify the email as an actual email. One very effective strategy is to add [COMPANY NAME] to your subject as in:
[ABC Industries] Addition to Services Section
A subject like that is far more effective than "Email" or "Untitled".
Also, do a quick scan of your email before you send it to make sure that it's clear and that you've attached the files you intended to. One clear email is infinitely more effective than three!
Above all, if we haven't responded to a request in a few days (or an urgent request in much less time), call us at 231-256-2829 or email support@leelanau.com.

The Week's News
There wasn't much in the way of news last week, except for this news about Rep. Howard Walker pushing for a statewide override of local zoning regarding wind energy. There was a nice article from mLive on Leelanau resident Angela Macke and her tea company By the Light of Day. We also had a photo of "the Crib" (North Manitou Shoal Light) and a mini-profile of Northport that you may enjoy.
The Week's Weather
It was a bit cool last week ... here's hoping next week is a little warmer 'cause I've sort of forgotten what the beach looks like.

Unless you want to read "news" that summer brings more workers to our area, there's precious little to read about in today's news. Since Northport is having their big Harbor Days celebration this weekend and next week, how about a look at Northport web sites?
The Leelanau Museum has a calendar called "The Way We Were" that has brief histories of Leelanau villages. Here's the history of Northport.
Northport's biggest historical attraction is the Grand Traverse Lighthouse, located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. It's a great museum that gives you a look at what it was like to live and work in a lighthouse in the late 1800s along the Great Lakes. You may also wish to check out this article about the Grand Traverse Light featuring an interview with Doug McCormick and Bette McCormick Olli.
As for Northport in the present time, you'll want to check out the Leelanau Township Chamber of Commerce and also Leelanau.com's guide to Northport for a listing of businesses and organizations.
One organization that we would like to pay special attention to is the Northport Community Arts Center. They bring regionally and nationally known performers of all kinds to town on a regular basis, so you'll want to keep an eye on them.
If you have a link that you think we should add, send us an email or post a comment below!

Nothing much in the news today, so here's a photo from June 18, 2005 of the sunset on "the Crib". The Crib (also known as the North Manitou Shoals Light) is now an automated lighthouse and you can learn more about it and see some historical pictures at Life Along the Manitou Passage.
The Leelanau County Chamber of Commerce invites you to join them aboard the Mishe-Mokwa tomorrow night (Tuesday, Jun 27). The cruise along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline includes a box lunch filled with tasty treats from The Village Cheese Shanty and cash bar.
The boat leaves promptly from the Manitou Island Transit dock in Leland Harbor at 6:30 p.m. and returns to Leland at 8:30 p.m. Specially priced tickets for the annual event are $15 per adult. Call the chamber office at 231-271-9895 to make your reservation.

mLive has a great feature on Leelanau resident Angela Macke and her company By the Light of Day. Macke produces 36 blends of organic loose teas (black, green, white and oolong) and tisanes (infusions made from just about anything but tea: roots, bark, berries, dried fruits, herbs, flowers, etc.). According to the article...
Most of the ingredients are grown on her 12-acre property, almost a quarter of which is given over to thousands of herb and flower plants like cornflowers and chrysanthemums, lemon balm and lemon grass, chamomile, lavender and assorted mints. She harvests them all summer long. There are also assorted berry bushes, fruit trees and grapes for raisins.

The Week's News
The top story of the week was the announcement of a purchase deal for Fishtown for a purchase price of $3 million that includes all historic structures on the north side of the Leland River (there's also a great photo of Fishtown from 1973 that you'll definitely want to check out). Other stories include a feature on migrant workers in Leelanau and Northern Michigan and news that a late spring frost has caused fairly extensive damage to tart & sweet cherries and apples.
The Week's Weather
Strawberries are ripe and there's a great feature on Michigan strawberries from Taste the Local Difference and Absolute Michigan. We had our first really hot weekend last weekend and a beautiful week this week.

While we're at it, how about a plug for the Fishtown Preservation Society?
