The Leelanau Almanac

Filed under: Leelanau, almanac, calendar, weather — Andrew McFarlane @ 8:30 am

A nice day for a ride in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore by cyoas55Fall Color is coming on strong!Fall Color Report (Oct 6): I think we might be at 50% color. There are some stretches with more advanced color - yellows, oranges, reds - and others that are still very much green. We should see peak color beginning Columbus Day Weekend (that's this weekend) but barring some nasty weather, it should continue to be very nice through at least next weekend.

It's 48 degrees under mostly sunny skies with moderate south winds at 8:30 AM at our Leland office. The barometer is at 1026 millibars (30.3 inches) with a relative humidity of 76%. We had a beautiful weekend - plenty of sun and not too chilly. The forecast for today calls for sun,  southeast winds and 10-20+ and a high near 70! There's a chance of rain tonight and Wednesday with highs tomorrow in the mid 60s. The outlook for the rest of the week is for a good deal of sun with highs near 70 into the weekend. Time to plan that Columbus Day Weekend trip to Leelanau!

October 2, 2008: Partly sunny, windy, scattered showers and 50s (57/42)
October 3, 2008: Mostly cloudy, light rain & 50 (52/39)
October 4, 2008: Mostly sunny & 50s (55/36)
October 5, 2008: Sunny & 60 (60/33)
October 6, 2008: Sunny & low 60s (63/46)

Bouy 45002 in Lake Michigan is located halfway between North Manitou Island and Washington Island in Lake Michigan. It provides wind and wave data. Also check out Michigan Sea Grant Coastwatch for water temps (the "early evening" images in their archive will give you a better idea of actual temps during peaks swimming hours ... in seasons where you might actually want to swim!).

Leelanau's wine trail featured in USA Today

Filed under: Business, Leelanau, farms, michigan, news, photo, travel, webdesign, wine — Andrew McFarlane @ 7:45 am

Article courtesy lpwines.com...

Willow Vineyard VI by Cotopaxi SprattmoranIn today's USA Today, wine writer Jerry Shriver and travel editor Chris Gray have profiled four up-and-coming wine regions in Off the beaten wine trail. The four are New York's Hudson Valley, Hill Country in Texas, the Eastern Townships, Quebec and yes, Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula!

The state's 56 wineries — six opened in the past year — are spread across Michigan along four wine trails, but most of the best grapes are grown near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and its bays. Top wineries are positioning themselves as small but key players in the Riesling renaissance that is taking hold across the country, and nearly 1 million visitors will arrive this year to sample the offerings. The most popular wine region, because of its prime setting along Lake Michigan, is the Leelanau Peninsula, home to about 20 wineries, 16 of which have public tasting rooms.

Read the rest of Riesling rising, and more, in Leelanau Peninsula, Michigan from USA Today.

South Manitou Island Lighthouse shines again on Saturday!

Special from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (with photo "Installing the Fesnel Lens" by Dave Hooper - slideshow):

This weekend, the South Manitou Island Lighthouse will shine for the first time in 50 years. Thanks to a partnership with Manitou Islands Memorial Society, Manitou Island Transit, and Electro-Optics Technology, Incorporated, the National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was able to install a replica third-order Fresnel lens in the completely refurbished lantern room of the lighthouse. Everyone is invited to go to their favorite South Manitou Island vantage point along the mainland of the Lakeshore at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 4 to see the light illuminated for the first time in 50 years. A formal dedication ceremony is planned for next spring.

Lighting the South Manitou Island Lighthouse is a National Park Service Centennial Initiative project. The Centennial Initiative is a 10-year program to reinvigorate America's national parks and prepare them for a second century. The initiative includes up to $100 million a year in federal funds for these projects, but requires matching funds from philanthropic donations to the National Park Service.

Superintendent Dusty Shultz lauded the efforts of project partners, saying "The South Manitou Island Light project was made possible through a partnership with Manitou Islands Memorial Society, Manitou Island Transit, and Electro-Optics Technology, Incorporated. Thanks to our partners, people will be able to once again see the distant light on the horizon, and visitors to the lighthouse will be able to view the replica lens and lantern room the way it once looked."

The replica third-order Fresnel lens was fabricated by Artworks Florida, and the lens is illuminated by a lighting source with a low-wattage bulb designed by Electro-Optics Technology of Traverse City. A crew of National Park Service maintenance personnel restored the lantern room and spiral stairway of the tower earlier this year, and only recently installed the lens and light. The total dollar cost is $93,000 split equally between the National Park Service and private donations from the partners along with donated time and materials furnished by Electro-Optics Technology.

Manitou Island Memorial Society president Rhonda Kruch is pleased by the progress, but notes "The Manitou Island Memorial Society is still seeking $13,000 in donations to fulfill their obligations under the agreement. Anyone who appreciates the new light should look us up at http://www.leelanau.com/lighthouse, and help us make history with this and other projects." The mailing address for the society is: Manitou Islands Memorial Society, PO Box 177, Empire, MI 49630-0177.

The iconic 104 foot South Manitou Island Lighthouse is strategically located on the heavily trafficked Manitou Passage on the 300 mile eastern route from Chicago to Mackinaw. It identified both the passage and the most frequently used refuge on the Great Lakes. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the 1858 Keepers Quarters and the 50th anniversary of the year the light was extinguished. "The anniversary dates make the completion of this project especially meaningful," said Shultz.

The Week's Weather

Fall Color is coming on strong!Fall color stalled this week at 40-50% color.  Some stretches had more advanced color - yellows, oranges, reds - but most remained mostly green. In true Northern Michigan style, the weather went from 80s to 40s over the course of the week. I wonder if there's any room in the bailout package for a few extra days of that 70+ degree weather??

September 26, 2008: Sunny & 80s (82/50)
September 27, 2008: Mostly sunny & 70s with late afternoon rain (76/60)

Fall Color on M-22

The new m22colortour.com web site hopes to cooperatively market M-22. A feature in the Traverse City Record-Eagle relates that Rand McNally recently rated the scenic route as one of the five greatest driving tours in America and that:

The M-22 Color Tour promotion is a collaborative effort of the visitors bureaus in Benzie and Manistee counties, along with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The three organizations pooled resources and marketing dollars to spread the word about the color route.

In addition to the Web site, the groups printed about 10,000 rack cards that are available at their respective offices, at Michigan Welcome Centers and at businesses along the route...

At a time when many folks are watching their gas gauges, one appeal of the M-22 Color Tour is that it's a one-tank trip for many in Michigan and across the Midwest. That makes it an appealing day trip or weekend getaway for those who want to savor autumnal beauty.

It certainly is a gorgeous route, as you can see from the photos in the Michigan Highway M-22 Group on Flickr - here's a slideshow for "fall" from the group which I imagine will grow as the color proceeds.

I should add that you can also find great places to stay along M-22 on our lodging page!
